शिक्षा से बदली ज़िंदगी और निःशुल्क उपचार से मिली नई रोशनी – जैतून की कहानी

 वाराणसी जिले के बड़ागांव ब्लॉक की रहने वाली जैतून नट समुदाय से आती हैं। नट समुदाय परंपरागत रूप से करतब दिखाने और सांप पकड़ने जैसे काम करता था, लेकिन समय के साथ इन पारंपरिक व्यवसायों में कमी आ गई। आज इस समुदाय के कई गरीब परिवार मजदूरी या भीख मांगकर अपना जीवन यापन करने को मजबूर हैं।

जैतून भी एक अत्यंत गरीब परिवार से हैं। उनके परिवार में पाँच बेटे और तीन बेटियाँ हैं। कई वर्ष पहले उनके पति का निधन हो गया, जिसके बाद पूरे परिवार की जिम्मेदारी उनके कंधों पर आ गई। पहले उनका गुजारा भीख मांगकर ही चलता था। वे गांव-गांव जाकर भीख मांगती थीं और कभी-कभी मजदूरी भी कर लेती थीं। इतने बड़े परिवार का पालन-पोषण करना उनके लिए बहुत कठिन था।

इसी दौरान गांव में Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) और जनमित्र न्यास (JMN) के सहयोग से प्रौढ़ शिक्षा से संबंधित एक सर्वे किया गया। इस पहल के तहत गांव में “शिक्षा प्लस कार्यक्रम” शुरू किया गया, जिसका उद्देश्य उन महिलाओं और वयस्कों को पढ़ना-लिखना सिखाना था जिन्हें बचपन में शिक्षा का अवसर नहीं मिल पाया।

इसी दौरान गांव में जन शिक्षक प्रिया यादव आईं। उन्होंने गांव की महिलाओं को शिक्षा के महत्व के बारे में बताया और उन्हें पढ़ाई से जुड़ने के लिए प्रेरित किया। उनकी प्रेरणा से जैतून भी नियमित रूप से सीखने की बैठकों में जाने लगीं। शुरुआत में उन्होंने अपना नाम लिखना सीखा। इसके बाद उन्होंने अपने गांव का नाम लिखना सीखा। धीरे-धीरे वे अक्षरों को पहचानने लगीं और पढ़ना-लिखना सीख गईं। कुछ समय बाद उन्हें जोड़-घटाना भी आने लगा और वे पैसों का हिसाब करना भी सीखने लगीं।

लेकिन जैतून की आंखों की रोशनी बहुत कम थी। कम दिखाई देने के कारण उन्हें पढ़ाई करने और रोजमर्रा के कामों में कई कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ता था। वे बहुत चिंतित रहती थीं क्योंकि उनके पास इलाज कराने के लिए पैसे नहीं थे।

जब उनकी इस समस्या की जानकारी हुई, तो जनमित्र न्यास (JMN) के सहयोग से उनका निःशुल्क मोतियाबिंद का ऑपरेशन कराया गया। ऑपरेशन के बाद उनकी आंखों की रोशनी ठीक हो गई और अब उन्हें साफ दिखाई देने लगा। इससे वे पढ़ाई और अपने दैनिक कार्य पहले से अधिक आसानी से करने लगीं।

अब जैतून पढ़-लिख सकती हैं और पैसों का हिसाब भी कर सकती हैं। उनकी बेटियाँ – आंचल, मुन्नी और खुशी – भी पढ़ना-लिखना सीख गई हैं। अब जब वे मजदूरी करने जाती हैं, तो उन्हें अपने काम का सही हिसाब मिल जाता है। पहले उन्हें यह पता नहीं चल पाता था कि उन्हें सही पैसे मिले हैं या नहीं, लेकिन अब वे खुद हिसाब कर लेती हैं।

जैतून बताती हैं कि शिक्षा ने उनके जीवन में एक नई रोशनी ला दी है। अब वे पहले से अधिक आत्मविश्वास और सम्मान के साथ अपने जीवन और परिवार की जिम्मेदारियों को संभाल पा रही हैं। वे शिव नादर फाउंडेशन (SNF) के शिक्षा प्लस कार्यक्रम, जनमित्र न्यास (JMN) और जन शिक्षक प्रिया यादव के प्रति हृदय से आभार व्यक्त करती हैं, जिन्होंने उन्हें पढ़ना-लिखना सीखने का अवसर दिया और उनकी आँखों के निःशुल्क इलाज की व्यवस्था करवाई। जैतून के अनुसार इस सहयोग ने न केवल उनकी आँखों की रोशनी वापस लौटाई, बल्कि उनके जीवन में नई उम्मीद, आत्मविश्वास और गरिमा भी वापस लाई है।

जैतून की कहानी यह बताती है कि यदि सही अवसर, सहयोग और मार्गदर्शन मिले, तो शिक्षा किसी भी व्यक्ति के जीवन में सकारात्मक बदलाव ला सकती है और उसे आत्मनिर्भर बनने की दिशा में आगे बढ़ा सकती है।

Education Changed Her Life and Free Treatment Brought Back Her Vision – The Story of Zaitoon

Zaitoon lives in Baragaon block of Varanasi district and belongs to the Nat community. Traditionally, the Nat community used to earn their livelihood by performing acrobatics and catching snakes. However, with time these traditional occupations have declined. Today, many poor families from this community survive through daily wage labour or begging.

Zaitoon also comes from an extremely poor family. She has five sons and three daughters. Several years ago, her husband passed away, leaving her with the entire responsibility of the family. Earlier, she managed her livelihood mainly through begging. She used to go from village to village asking for alms and occasionally worked as a labourer. Supporting such a large family was extremely difficult for her.

During this time, a survey related to adult education was conducted in the village with the support of the Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) and Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN). Under this initiative, the “Shiksha Plus Programme” was launched in the village. The aim of this programme was to teach reading and writing to women and adults who had not received the opportunity for education during childhood.

During the programme, community educator Priya Yadav visited the village. She explained to the women the importance of education and encouraged them to join the learning sessions. Inspired by her, Zaitoon also began attending the learning meetings regularly. Initially, she learned to write her name. Later, she learned to write the name of her village. Gradually, she started recognizing letters and learned to read and write. After some time, she also learned basic arithmetic and began understanding how to calculate money.

However, Zaitoon had very poor eyesight. Due to her weak vision, she faced many difficulties in studying and performing daily activities. She was very worried because she did not have the financial resources for medical treatment.

When this problem came to light, Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN) helped arrange a free cataract surgery for her. After the operation, her eyesight improved significantly and she could see clearly again. This made it easier for her to continue learning and manage her daily work.

Today, Zaitoon can read and write and is able to calculate money. Her daughters – Anchal, Munni and Khushi – have also learned to read and write. Now when she goes for labour work, she can check and calculate the wages she receives. Earlier, she could not verify whether she was paid correctly, but now she can calculate it herself.

Zaitoon shares that education has brought a new light into her life. She now feels more confident and empowered to manage her daily life and support her family. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the Shiksha Plus Programme of the Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF), Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN), and community educator Priya Yadav for giving her the opportunity to learn to read and write and for facilitating her free eye treatment. According to Zaitoon, this support has not only restored her vision but also brought renewed hope and dignity into her life.

Zaitoon’s story shows that when people receive the right opportunities, support, and guidance, education can bring positive change in their lives and help them move towards self-reliance.
