Adult Education Empowering Women: Radhika’s Journey Towards Self-Reliance

Even today, many women in rural communities never had the opportunity to receive education during childhood. Poverty, household responsibilities, and social circumstances prevented them from attending school. As a result, basic tasks such as managing finances, understanding official documents, or supporting their children’s education become difficult for them. In such situations, adult education programmes play an important role in bringing positive change to their lives.

The story of Radhika, a resident of Bagiya village in Kathiraon Gram Panchayat of Baragaon block, Varanasi, is an inspiring example of such transformation. Due to family circumstances and domestic responsibilities during her childhood, Radhika never had the chance to learn reading and writing. Over the years, her life remained focused on household and family duties, leaving education far behind.

Her journey began when an adult literacy survey was conducted in the village under the Shiksha Plus Programme, an initiative of the Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) and implemented by Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN). The survey aimed to identify individuals in the village who had not yet learned to read and write.

During the survey, community educator Halima visited households to collect information. It was during this process that Radhika learned about the programme. When Halima explained that learning sessions would be organized for adults who had missed formal education, Radhika felt a new sense of hope.

When the learning sessions began in the village, Radhika joined them with great enthusiasm. She made sure to finish her household chores early so that she could attend the classes on time.

Initially, recognizing and writing letters was challenging for her. Sometimes it took time to understand the alphabets, but she continued learning with patience and determination. With regular practice, group support, and guidance from Halima, her confidence gradually increased.

Soon, Radhika learned to recognize letters and began reading and writing simple words. This was a significant achievement for her.

Today, Radhika better understands the importance of education. Earlier, she had to depend on others to read or explain documents, but now she attempts to read and understand them herself.

The positive impact of adult education is also visible within her family. Radhika has become more aware of the importance of education for her children and actively encourages them to attend school regularly. She now believes that education is a key pathway to a better future.

Radhika’s story demonstrates that with the right opportunity and support, learning can begin at any stage of life. Adult education not only improves literacy but also strengthens confidence, awareness, and participation in community life.

ग्रामीण समाज में आज भी बड़ी संख्या में ऐसी महिलाएँ हैं जिन्हें बचपन में शिक्षा प्राप्त करने का अवसर नहीं मिल पाया। गरीबी, पारिवारिक जिम्मेदारियों और सामाजिक परिस्थितियों के कारण वे विद्यालय नहीं जा सकीं। इसके परिणामस्वरूप जीवन के कई महत्वपूर्ण कार्य—जैसे हिसाब-किताब करना, सरकारी कागज़ समझना या बच्चों की पढ़ाई में सहयोग करना—उनके लिए कठिन हो जाते हैं। ऐसे में प्रौढ़ शिक्षा कार्यक्रम उनके जीवन में सकारात्मक परिवर्तन लाने का एक महत्वपूर्ण माध्यम बनता है।

वाराणसी जिले के बड़ागांव ब्लॉक के ग्राम बगियाँ, ग्राम पंचायत कठिरांव की रहने वाली राधिका की कहानी इसी परिवर्तन का एक प्रेरणादायक उदाहरण है। बचपन में पारिवारिक परिस्थितियों और घरेलू जिम्मेदारियों के कारण राधिका को पढ़ने-लिखने का अवसर नहीं मिल सका। समय के साथ घर और परिवार की जिम्मेदारियों में वे इतनी व्यस्त रहीं कि शिक्षा उनसे दूर ही रह गई।

इसी दौरान गांव में शिक्षा प्लस कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत एक सर्वे किया गया। यह कार्यक्रम Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) की पहल है और Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN) द्वारा लागू किया जा रहा है। इस सर्वे के माध्यम से यह जानकारी जुटाई जा रही थी कि गांव में कौन पढ़ा-लिखा है और कौन अब भी पढ़ना-लिखना नहीं जानता।

सर्वे के दौरान जन शिक्षक हलीमा घर-घर जाकर लोगों से जानकारी एकत्र कर रही थीं। इसी समय राधिका को इस कार्यक्रम के बारे में पता चला। जब हलीमा ने उन्हें बताया कि गांव में ऐसे लोगों के लिए कक्षाएँ चलाई जा रही हैं जो पढ़ना-लिखना नहीं जानते, तो राधिका के मन में एक नई उम्मीद जगी।

जब गांव में सीखने की बैठकों और कक्षाओं की शुरुआत हुई, तो राधिका ने पूरे उत्साह के साथ उसमें भाग लेना शुरू किया। पढ़ाई के प्रति उनका उत्साह इतना था कि वे अपने घर के सभी काम पहले ही पूरा कर लेती थीं ताकि समय पर कक्षा में शामिल हो सकें।

शुरुआत में अक्षरों को पहचानने और लिखने में उन्हें कठिनाई होती थी। कई बार अक्षरों को समझने में समय लगता था, लेकिन उन्होंने धैर्य और लगन के साथ सीखना जारी रखा। नियमित अभ्यास, समूह के सहयोग और जन शिक्षक हलीमा के मार्गदर्शन से धीरे-धीरे उनका आत्मविश्वास बढ़ने लगा।

कुछ समय बाद राधिका ने अक्षरों को पहचानना और शब्दों को जोड़कर पढ़ना-लिखना सीख लिया। यह उनके लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धि थी।

अब राधिका शिक्षा के महत्व को समझने लगी हैं। पहले किसी भी कागज़ को समझने के लिए उन्हें दूसरों पर निर्भर रहना पड़ता था, लेकिन अब वे स्वयं पढ़ने और समझने का प्रयास करती हैं।

प्रौढ़ शिक्षा का सकारात्मक प्रभाव उनके परिवार पर भी दिखाई देने लगा है। अब राधिका अपने बच्चों की पढ़ाई के प्रति अधिक जागरूक हो गई हैं और उन्हें नियमित रूप से विद्यालय भेजने के लिए प्रेरित करती हैं। वे समझ चुकी हैं कि शिक्षा जीवन में आगे बढ़ने का एक महत्वपूर्ण साधन है।

राधिका की कहानी यह दर्शाती है कि यदि सही अवसर और सहयोग मिले, तो किसी भी उम्र में शिक्षा प्राप्त की जा सकती है। प्रौढ़ शिक्षा केवल साक्षरता बढ़ाने का माध्यम नहीं है, बल्कि यह आत्मविश्वास, जागरूकता और सामाजिक भागीदारी को भी मजबूत बनाती है।
