A New Beginning to an Unfulfilled Dream: Renu Devi’s Learning Journey

 “Please write my name too. I want to study.” – Renu Devi

For most of her life, Renu Devi, a 39-year-old woman from the Musahar community in Barai village of Baragaon block, Varanasi, believed that education was something she had missed forever. Poverty, family responsibilities, and early marriage had kept her away from school.

Today, however, Renu is writing a new chapter in her life.

Her journey back to learning began through the Shiksha Plus Programme, an initiative of the Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) and implemented by Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN) to promote adult literacy among marginalized communities.

A Childhood Interrupted

Renu’s childhood was filled with hardship. When she was young, her mother fell seriously ill with tuberculosis. Caring for her mother meant that Renu could no longer attend school regularly. Eventually, she had to leave school before completing even the early grades.

Soon after, her mother passed away due to lack of treatment, and household responsibilities fell on Renu’s young shoulders.

At the age of around 14 years, she was married to Rajkumar. After marriage, she began working as a daily wage labourer in agricultural fields and households to support her family.

A Life of Struggles

Renu’s life as a mother was equally difficult. She has given birth to nine children, but tragically seven of them did not survive. Some were stillborn, while others passed away shortly after birth.

Today, only two of her children are alive.

Years of hard labour, repeated pregnancies, and limited access to healthcare have taken a toll on her health. Yet, despite these hardships, the dream of learning never disappeared from her heart.

A Chance to Learn Again

When the Shiksha Plus Programme began conducting an adult literacy survey in the village, community educator Pratima Gaur visited households to identify people who could not read or write.

At that moment, Renu Devi was working in the fields. Curious about the activity, she approached Pratima and asked what the survey was about.

When she learned that literacy classes would be organized within the village, she hesitated at first. Like many others, she wondered whether studying at her age was even possible.

But the idea stayed with her.

The next day, when she saw Pratima again, she said with determination:

“Please write my name too. I want to study.”

At the time, Renu was eight months pregnant. Initially, there was hesitation about enrolling her, but her determination convinced the educator to include her name in the class list.

Learning Against All Odds

During the course of the programme, Renu gave birth to a baby girl. After resting for about 12 days, she returned to the learning sessions—often carrying her newborn baby with her.

Today, Renu can:

• Recognize letters

• Perform basic addition and subtraction

• Read simple words and sentences

Her dedication has inspired other learners in the class. When participants were asked who was the most enthusiastic learner, many named Renu Devi.

A Symbol of Hope

Renu’s journey reflects the transformative power of education. What once seemed impossible has now become part of her everyday life.

Through the Shiksha Plus Programme, an initiative of the Shiv Nadar Foundation implemented by Jan Mitra Nyas, women like Renu are rediscovering the opportunity to learn and rebuild their confidence.

Today, Renu Devi is not only learning to read and write—she is reclaiming a dream that had remained incomplete for decades.

Her story reminds us of a simple yet powerful truth:

It is never too late to learn.

अधूरी चाह से नई शुरुआत: रेनू देवी की शिक्षा की कहानी

वाराणसी जिले के बड़ागांव ब्लॉक के ग्राम बराई की मुसहर बस्ती में रहने वाली 39 वर्षीय रेनू देवी आज अपने जीवन की उस अधूरी इच्छा को पूरा करने की दिशा में कदम बढ़ा रही हैं, जो बचपन में परिस्थितियों के कारण अधूरी रह गई थी। वर्षों तक मजदूरी और घरेलू जिम्मेदारियों में उलझी रहने वाली रेनू अब फिर से पढ़ाई की राह पर लौट आई हैं। उनकी कहानी यह साबित करती है कि सीखने की कोई उम्र नहीं होती।

शिक्षा प्लस कार्यक्रम, जो Shiv Nadar Foundation (SNF) की एक पहल है और Jan Mitra Nyas (JMN) द्वारा लागू किया जा रहा है, के अंतर्गत गांव में प्रौढ़ शिक्षा से संबंधित एक सर्वे किया गया। इस सर्वे के दौरान यह जानकारी जुटाई जा रही थी कि गांव में कौन पढ़ा-लिखा है और कौन अभी भी पढ़ना-लिखना नहीं जानता।

इसी दौरान जन शिक्षक प्रतिमा गौड़ गांव में घर-घर जाकर लोगों से जानकारी ले रही थीं। उसी समय रेनू देवी खेत में मजदूरी कर रही थीं। उन्होंने उत्सुकतापूर्वक प्रतिमा गौड़ से पूछा कि वह क्या कर रही हैं। प्रतिमा गौड़ ने उन्हें बताया कि गांव में उन लोगों के लिए पढ़ाई की कक्षाएँ शुरू की जा रही हैं जो पढ़ना-लिखना नहीं जानते।

शुरुआत में रेनू देवी को विश्वास नहीं हुआ। उन्होंने हँसते हुए कहा कि इस उम्र में पढ़ाई कैसे संभव है। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि यहां के लोग गरीब मजदूर हैं, वे कहाँ पढ़ने जाएंगे और पढ़ाई का सामान कहाँ से आएगा। तब प्रतिमा गौड़ ने उन्हें समझाया कि कक्षाएँ गांव में ही लगेंगी और लोगों को उनके घर के पास ही पढ़ाया जाएगा।

यह सुनकर रेनू देवी के मन में एक नई उम्मीद जगी। अगले दिन उन्होंने प्रतिमा गौड़ से कहा—

“मेरा भी नाम लिखिए, मुझे भी पढ़ना है।”

उस समय रेनू देवी आठ महीने की गर्भवती थीं, इसलिए शुरुआत में उनका नाम जोड़ने में संकोच हुआ। लेकिन उनकी सीखने की तीव्र इच्छा को देखते हुए अंततः उनका नाम सूची में शामिल कर लिया गया और वे कक्षा में आने लगीं।

कक्षा के दौरान ही रेनू देवी ने एक बच्ची को जन्म दिया। प्रसव के बाद लगभग 12 दिनों तक उन्हें आराम करना पड़ा, लेकिन इसके बाद वे अपनी नवजात बच्ची को साथ लेकर फिर से पढ़ाई के लिए आने लगीं।

आज रेनू देवी अक्षरों को पहचानने लगी हैं, साधारण जोड़-घटाना कर लेती हैं और किताबों को जोड़कर पढ़ने का प्रयास कर रही हैं। उनकी लगन को देखकर अन्य शिक्षार्थी भी प्रेरित होते हैं। जब कक्षा में पूछा गया कि पढ़ने-लिखने में सबसे तेज कौन है, तो अधिकतर लोगों ने रेनू देवी का नाम लिया।

रेनू देवी का बचपन भी संघर्षों से भरा था। जब वे छोटी थीं, तभी उनकी माँ को टीबी की बीमारी हो गई। माँ की देखभाल की जिम्मेदारी के कारण उनकी पढ़ाई छूट गई। कुछ समय बाद इलाज के अभाव में उनकी माँ का निधन हो गया। इसके बाद बचपन में ही घर की जिम्मेदारियाँ उनके ऊपर आ गईं।

करीब 14 वर्ष की आयु में उनका विवाह राजकुमार से हो गया। विवाह के बाद वे अपने पति के साथ खेतों और गांव के बड़े घरों में मजदूरी करने लगीं।

रेनू देवी का मातृत्व अनुभव भी बेहद कठिन रहा है। उन्होंने अब तक नौ बच्चों को जन्म दिया है, जिनमें से सात बच्चों की मृत्यु हो चुकी है—कुछ जन्म के समय और कुछ जन्म के कुछ समय बाद। वर्तमान में उनके दो बच्चे जीवित हैं। लगातार गर्भधारण, बच्चों की देखभाल और मजदूरी ने उनके स्वास्थ्य को भी कमजोर कर दिया है।

इन सब कठिनाइयों के बावजूद रेनू देवी ने सीखने की अपनी इच्छा को जीवित रखा। आज वे फिर से पढ़ना-लिखना सीख रही हैं और अपने जीवन की अधूरी चाह को पूरा करने की दिशा में आगे बढ़ रही हैं।

रेनू देवी की कहानी यह संदेश देती है कि यदि मन में सीखने की सच्ची इच्छा हो, तो जीवन के किसी भी पड़ाव पर नई शुरुआत की जा सकती है।
